Boston - Day 1

After weeks of excitement and anticipation, the morning finally came and we were leaving for our E-Week trip.  And like always, the first morning usually comes with some surprises. Just as the entire group was arriving promptly at 6:00 am, we got an alert that our plane was delayed two hours. Go figure.

So, after a lazy morning in the airport, we finally got in the air and landed in Boston at right around 6 PM EST.

The subway to the hotel was easy enough and after foraging for a quick dinner in the neighborhood, we headed out for an evening stroll. We walked through City Hall Plaza, past Boston City Hall, past several Dunkin’ Donuts before happening upon Boston’s historic King's Chapel Church and Graveyard and into Boston Common. The park is the starting point of the Freedom Trail and quite scenic at night.

After snapping a few photos we traveled through the park parallel to Beacon Street, headed for Beacon Hill. The students were nice enough to oblige me in wanting to snap a photo outside the famous "Cheer's" sign outside of the "Cheer's" bar. Of the 17 students, only one had ever heard of the show! Fortunately, they were all very polite but not nearly as bemused about the field trip as I was.  We then headed down Charles Street to get dessert at J.P. Licks Ice Creamery.

We strolled back through Beacon Hill, along the quaint cobblestone streets, where the apartments looked very charming and also quite expensive. We came back through the park, made a quick 7-Eleven stop and finally got back to the hotel about 10:45.

Tomorrow will be an early morning. Our schedule has us out to Harvard Square and Boston University in the morning before a guided tour of the Massachusetts State House in the afternoon. We'll do a couple of Freedom Trail sites after that and then dinner on Newberry Street tomorrow night.
